Lip botox uses very small injections of botulinum toxin type A into the orbicularis oris around the mouth to roll the upper lip slightly outward (a lip flip) and soften vertical lip lines. The treatment takes about 10 minutes, results appear within 3 to 5 days, and effects usually last 2 to 3 months at our three Seoul-area locations.

What is lip botox?

Lip botox is the use of tiny doses of botulinum toxin type A, a purified neuromodulator, to relax the orbicularis oris, the ring of muscle around the mouth. Relaxing the upper edge gently rolls the lip outward so a little more pink shows, an effect known as a lip flip, and it can also soften fine vertical lines above the lip. It does not add volume the way filler does.

At Reberry Clinic, lip botox is consultation-led. Because doses around the mouth are small and placement is precise, the clinic’s doctors carefully plan units and points to keep your smile, speech, and ability to drink from a straw natural. The aim is a subtle, balanced change, not a dramatic reshaping.

Lip botox is often discussed alongside lip filler, since the two address different goals: muscle relaxation versus added volume. International patients are supported in English across our three Seoul-area locations (Gangnam, Myeongdong, Incheon Airport).

How botulinum toxin works

Botulinum toxin type A is a neuromodulator that temporarily blocks the release of acetylcholine at the neuromuscular junction, the signal that tells a muscle to contract. Placed in tiny amounts at the upper border of the orbicularis oris, it relaxes that part of the muscle so the upper lip turns outward slightly and shows a touch more pink. The same relaxation softens the pucker that deepens vertical lip lines. The effect is gradual and reversible: as nerve terminals recover over a couple of months, full muscle movement returns and the lip flip fades, which is why touch-ups are needed.

Assessment

The doctor studies your smile, upper-lip show, and lip lines to plan placement across roughly 2 to 4 tiny injection points.

Micro-doses of botulinum toxin type A are placed at the upper border of the orbicularis oris over about 10 minutes.

The toxin blocks acetylcholine release, relaxing the upper lip muscle within 3 to 5 days.

As the muscle eases, the upper lip rolls outward slightly, with the full effect by around 1 to 2 weeks.

Movement returns over 2 to 3 months as nerve signalling recovers, so touch-up sessions sustain the effect.

The Process

Your Lip Botox Journey

Consultation

The clinic’s doctors assess your smile, upper-lip show, and goals, then plan a conservative dose in English.

The injections take about 10 minutes; ice or topical numbing keeps the visit comfortable.

You can usually return to normal activities right away, avoiding firm pressure on the lips for a few hours.

The lip flip appears in 3 to 5 days, with the full effect by around 1 to 2 weeks.

Results last about 2 to 3 months; touch-up sessions maintain the subtle effect.

Cautions & Contraindications

Scientific Evidence

Studies show that small doses of botulinum toxin type A at the upper lip can increase visible upper-lip height. In published series, a lip flip using roughly 2 to 6 units increased upper-lip show by a few millimetres on smiling, with onset within 3 to 5 days and duration of about 2 to 3 months. Conservative dosing is consistently emphasised to preserve lip competence and natural speech.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

What is lip botox?

Lip botox places tiny doses of botulinum toxin type A at the upper border of the muscle around the mouth to roll the upper lip slightly outward, called a lip flip, and soften fine lip lines. It adds no volume. Results appear within 3 to 5 days and typically last 2 to 3 months.

Lip botox usually lasts about 2 to 3 months, shorter than facial areas because the mouth muscle is very active. Dosing is individualised on our botox injection page. Most patients schedule touch-ups several times a year to maintain the subtle flip, since the upper lip is in constant motion.

A lip flip relaxes the muscle so the upper lip rolls outward, showing slightly more pink, while filler adds actual volume to make lips fuller. They solve different goals and can be combined. To compare volume-based options, see our injectable fillers page, which explains how fillers differ from muscle relaxation.

You will typically notice the lip flip within 3 to 5 days, with the full effect developing by around 1 to 2 weeks as the upper-lip muscle relaxes. The change is subtle, showing a little more upper-lip pink, especially when you smile. Because doses are tiny, it is meant to look natural rather than dramatic.

Discomfort is minimal, felt as a few brief pinpricks during the 2 to 4 micro-injections at the upper lip. The needles are very fine, and ice or topical numbing can be used for sensitive patients. The whole process takes about 10 minutes, and any stinging fades almost immediately after each tiny injection.

Downtime is minimal, and most patients return to daily activities right away. You may notice slight redness or a tiny bruise that settles within a few days. Avoid firm pressure on the lips, vigorous exercise, and very hot drinks for several hours so the small doses settle exactly where intended.

When dosed conservatively, lip botox keeps speech, eating, and drinking natural for most people. Because the upper-lip muscle helps form some sounds and grip a straw, the clinic’s doctors use small, precise amounts to avoid over-relaxation. Tell them if you sing or play a wind instrument. See our botox injection page.

Adults who want a subtle lip flip or softer fine lip lines, rather than added volume, are ideal candidates. If you want noticeably fuller lips, filler may suit you better or be combined. A consultation confirms the plan. Explore volume options on our injectable fillers page.

Lip botox uses only a few units, far fewer than most facial areas, spread across 2 to 4 tiny points to protect lip function. The exact amount is individualised, as outlined on our botox injection page. Your doctor sets a conservative dose to keep the result subtle and your smile natural.

Yes, a lip flip and lip filler are often planned together because they address different goals: relaxation versus volume. Your doctor sequences them safely, sometimes spacing the appointments. To understand the volume side, see our injectable fillers page for how fillers shape and define the lips.

Common effects are brief redness, a tiny bruise, or mild tenderness for a day or two. Less commonly, slight difficulty pursing the lips or an uneven feel can occur, settling as the small dose balances. Serious reactions are rare with proper technique. Share your full medical history with your doctor to reduce any risk beforehand.

Botulinum toxin type A has a long, well-documented safety record for perioral use when administered by trained doctors at small, appropriate doses. Effects are temporary and reversible as nerve signalling recovers over a couple of months. Choosing an experienced clinic and conservative dosing matters far more than chasing a stronger or more obvious lip change.

Aftercare is simple: avoid pressing or rubbing the lips, skip very hot drinks and straws for a few hours, and avoid strenuous exercise and alcohol that day. Pairing with gentle skin care around the mouth supports comfort. Your doctor provides written guidance to follow once you leave.

Lip botox is very quick, so even a 1 to 2 day visit covers the consultation and treatment. Because there is minimal downtime, you can carry on with your plans the same day. Our English-speaking team helps schedule the appointment so it fits neatly into a short trip to Seoul without disrupting your itinerary.

Yes, you can fly the same day, since the treatment is quick and non-invasive. Try to avoid pressing the lips against pillows or hands during the first few hours, and skip very hot drinks early on. Cabin pressure does not affect the result, so air travel after lip botox is generally not a concern for most patients.

International patients can have remote check-ins in English about one to two weeks after treatment to confirm the lip flip and plan touch-ups around future trips. Because the effect is subtle, a clear photo helps. You can also arrange complementary skin care when you return, and your dosing notes are kept on file.
